Welcome to the National Museum of Malaysia. Here, the nation’s historical and cultural heritage is preserved and showcased through a collection of artefacts and treasures.
The National Museum was conceived by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. Standing proudly in Kuala Lumpur, it is one of the post-independence buildings that incorporates Malay architecture and traditional carvings. Since its official opening on 31 August 1963, the National Museum has remained committed to its role as a guardian of heritage, safeguarding the nation’s historical treasures. It is here that the enduring identity and evidence of the nation’s civilisation are preserved as symbols of unity and the collective identity of all Malaysians. Moving forward, the National Museum is optimistic in expanding its role as a platform connecting communities across generations, while supporting the pillars of national unity through appreciation of our shared heritage.
The National Museum awaits you with four galleries that narrate the country’s historical journey leading to the formation of Malaysia as you know it today. Immerse yourself, enjoy, and discover new knowledge through thematic exhibitions and educational museum activities based on ‘edutainment’ and ‘experiential learning’, including the use of the latest visitor-friendly technologies.
In its effort to elevate the museum field, the National Museum will continue to actively conduct research, exhibitions, and educational programmes. These initiatives will be expanded and enhanced, in line with its role as a non-formal educational institution that is accessible and open to learning at any time. May the National Museum continue to be a sustainable and inclusive tourism destination for all.
In closing, cherish and safeguard the legacy of our national heritage, which is our shared pride.
Let’s visit the National Museum!
